General Description

The Junior Lifeguard position is responsible for guarding the pool during open swimming and learning the procedures to open/close the pool/pool deck and maintain its safety and cleanliness.

The Junior Lifeguard must be available from the beginning of the season through to Labor Day (to be negotiated with the General Manager. He/She must be available to work nights and weekends during this time period. No vacation is provided during the seven week lesson season.

As with all of WBC program staff, the Junior Lifeguard should be a role model for participants in the swim programs, exemplifying the key characteristics we expect of our employees: Commitment, Respect, Responsibility and Cooperation.

While on duty, the Junior Lifeguard must wear the bathing suit and uniform specified by the General Manager in accordance with state regulations. When representing the Club at swim events and club meetings, the Junior Lifeguard should wear the uniform specified by the GM (collared shirt, khakis).

The Junior Lifeguard is a part-time (12-20 hours per week) summer employee, paid an hourly rate. As an hourly employee, the Junior Lifeguard is required to submit a weekly timecard to the General Manager for approval and all overtime needs to be approved in advance by the Head Guard, or a manager on duty if Head Guard is not available.

Qualifications & Certifications

The Junior Lifeguard must be certified in Lifeguard Training and First Aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer. The Junior Lifeguard must be at least 16 years of age.

Reporting/Management Relationships

The Junior Lifeguard reports to the Head Guard, working under the direction of the General Manager.

Primary Responsibilities

Schedule:

• The Junior Lifeguard will be assigned to hours by the Head Guard.
• See Lifeguard Policies section for Work Schedule Policies.  
• Junior Guards are typically assigned evening and weekend hours.
• Junior Guards may not change their assigned hours without prior approval of the Head Guard.

Duties of the Junior Lifeguard include:

• Be responsible for life guarding and maintaining a safe & clean pool area
• Attend pre-season training and orientation sessions.
• Diligently guard the pool while on duty in accordance with Red Cross guidelines and WBC policies (See Lifeguard Policies).  The Junior Life Guard works under a Lifeguard whenever they are on duty.
• See that the pool area is equipped with all necessary safety and rescue equipment. Report any deficiencies to Head Guard or Manager on duty.
• Learn & implement the proper procedures for maintaining proper pool water quality (testing, chlorine, etc.). Complete chlorine supply report and notify Head Guard/Manager when supply is running low.
• Learn & implement the proper procedures for opening and closing the pool, and follow the procedures on the GM daily checklist.
• Keep the pool deck clean, free of trash, etc.
• Enforce WBC pool safety & cleanliness rules (See back of Membership Directory) - no running, slide safety, no diapers in pool, no eating on pool deck, etc.

• May participate in field trips when assigned.
• May be asked to complete other tasks at discretion of GM or Summer Managers.
• May not teach swimming lessons during the day or private lessons at night.
