General Description

The Assistant Sailing Instructor teaches sailing lessons while incorporating safe boating practices. Boats involved in the program include privately owned Optis, N10s, Lasers and club-owned 420s.  Children in the Youth Sailing Program range in age from 9 through high school.

The Sailing Instructor is a role model for staff and participants in the sailing programs, exemplifying integrity and the key characteristics we expect of our employees: Commitment, Respect, Responsibility and Cooperation.

The Assistant Sailing Instructor is a part time (12-20 hrs per week) summer employee paid an hourly rate. As an hourly employee, he/she is required to submit a weekly timecard to the General Manager for approval.  He/she must be available from the close of Winchester Public Schools through an end of season date to be negotiated with the Sailing Director (generally through the third week in August). The instructor's hours will be determined by the Sailing Program Manager which will typically run 7:30am-11:30pm. No vacation is provided during the eight-week teaching season .

While on duty, the Assistant Sailing Instructor must wear the uniform specified by the GM (Instructor's t-shirt, khakis or other suitable clothing as specified by the GM). When representing the Club at sailing events and club meetings, he/she should wear the uniform specified by the GM (collared shirt, khakis or other suitable clothing as specified by the GM).

Qualifications & Certifications

The Assistant Sailing Instructor must be 17 years of age or older. CPR Certification is desirable. Certification fees are to be paid by employee. We seek a candidate with prior sailing experience.

Reporting/Management Relationships

The Assistant Sailing Instructor reports to the Head Sailing Instructor, working under the direction of the General Manager with input by the Sailing Director.

Primary Responsibilities

Duties of the Assistant Sailing Instructor include:

  • To assist beginner sailors in morning routine including use of lockers, equipment storage, rowing, parts of boat, rigging and de-rigging of boats.
  • To help supervise the locker area at the beginning and end of lessons and to see that the area is kept clean and sailors store their gear properly.
  • To accept feedback from Sailing Program Manager on ways to improve teaching techniques.
  • To be familiar with sailors and their partners and to assist in helping sailors find suitable substitutes when their partners are absent with the goal of maintaining the optimal 2 sailors per boat.
  • To assist sailing instructors and to work as a team member in presenting lessons plans and in teaching beginners the basics of sailing.
  • Be responsible for following WBC safety procedures on the lake.
  • Attend pre-season training and orientation sessions to learn of responsibilities. Training session may include:
    • Proper use of the Queen and the whalers.
    • Proper care and storage of the club 420's.
    • Maintenance of safe and clean dock area.
    • Enforcement of WBC boating rules (See back of Membership Directory).
  • To maintain areas used by sailing lessons & sailing staff.
  • Instructors are responsible for cleaning up after themselves in any areas of the club they use.
  • Other
    • Assist with weekend race committee as needed.
    • May participate in field trips when assigned.
    • May be asked to complete other tasks at discretion of GM or Summer Managers.
    • Sailing staff may make private arrangements to assist members in hauling boats to/from regattas; this must be done off the clock and the Boat Club assumes no liability for such services.
