General Description

The Lifeguard/Swimming Instructor is responsible for guarding the pool during open swimming, teaching swimming lessons, and learning the procedures to open/close the pool/pool deck and maintain its safety and cleanliness.

The Lifeguard/Swimming Instructor must be available from Memorial Day through an end of season date to be negotiated with the Swimming Director. He/She must be available to work nights and weekends during this time period.

As with all of WBC program staff, the Lifeguard/Swim Instructor should be a role model for participants in the swim programs, exemplifying the key characteristics we expect of our employees: Commitment, Respect, Responsibility and Cooperation.

While on duty, the Lifeguard/Swim Instructor must wear the bathing suit and uniform specified by the WBC Management in accordance with state regulations. When representing the Club at swim events and club meetings, the Lifeguard/Swim Instructor should wear the uniform specified by the WBC Management (collared shirt, khakis).

The Lifeguard/Swim Instructor is a full time (35-40 hours) summer employee, paid an hourly rate. As an hourly employee, the Lifeguard/Swim Instructor is required to submit a weekly timecard to the WBC Management for approval and all overtime needs to be approved in advance by the Swimming Program Manager. Qualifications & Certifications

The Lifeguard/Swim Instructor must be certified in Lifeguard Training and First Aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer as well as in Red Cross certified Water Safety Instruction (WSI). Must be at least 18 years of age.

Reporting/Management Relationships

The Lifeguard/Swim Instructor reports to the Swimming Program Manager, working under the direction of the WBC Management.

Primary Responsibilities

Duties of the lifeguard include:

  • The Lifeguard/Swim Instructor will be assigned to hours by the Head Guard:
    See Lifeguard Policies section for Work Schedule Policies.
  • Be responsible for lifeguarding and maintaining a safe & clean pool area
    • Attend pre-season training and orientation sessions.
    • Diligently guard the pool while on duty in accordance with Red Cross guidelines and WBC policies (See Lifeguard Policies).
    • See that the pool area is equipped with all necessary safety and rescue equipment. Report any deficiencies to Head Guard or Manager on duty.
    • Learn & implement the proper procedures for maintaining proper pool water quality (testing, chlorine, etc.). Complete chlorine supply report and notify Senior Guard/Swimming Program Manager when supply is running low.
    • Learn & implement the proper procedures for opening and closing the pool, and follow the procedures on the WBC Management daily checklist.
    • Administer the swim badge test in accordance with WBC guidelines.
    • Keep the pool deck clean, free of trash, etc.
    • Enforce WBC pool safety & cleanliness rules (See back of Membership Directory) - no running, slide safety, no diapers in pool, no eating on pool deck, etc.
  • Teach Swimming Lessons
    • Teach assigned lessons in accordance with Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Guidelines.
    • Accept feedback from Swimming Program Manager and Senior Guard on ways to improve teaching techniques.
    • Provide guidance and track attendance of your assigned Swim Aide(s) regarding their role in assisting with swimming lessons.
    • Lifeguard/Swimming Instructors may teach private lessons when off duty during adult swim time, according to WBC Private Lesson Policies. (See Lifeguard Policies.)
    • Complete Red Cross certificates for program participants and make recommendations for swimming level for following year.
  • Other
    • May participate in field trips when assigned.
    • May be asked to complete other tasks at discretion of WBC Management/Summer Managers/Swimming Program Manager.
