Swim Team

Our Swim Team competes in a local summer league and has a home club swim meet, a dual swim meet against each of the other league members, and a championship meet (with all teams attending) during the season.  Consult the calendar for the exact dates, times and locations of meets.

Swim team practices are according to the schedule listed below.  Children on the swim team must have their badge and attend only one of the practices.  Consult the dues and fees page at MyWBC for information about costs. Any member of the Club between the ages of 7 and 16 who has passed the badge test may join the swim team. Plus we have a 6-and-under swim team -- where no badge test is required.

The 2013 Program has some changes versus prior years. Please see the 2013 Sailing / Swim Team FAQ page for more information.

The expected practice schedule is as follows:

Please note that bathing caps are MANDATORY for all female swimmers during swim practices and swim meets. We will provide one bathing cap per female swimmer at the beginning of the summer.

Dual swim meets generally have warmups starting at 3:00 pm and the meet starts at 3:30 pm. Consult the calendar for more information.

HOME CLUB SWIM MEET

We will kick off the swim team season with a home club swim meet at WBC.  We will divide our team into two, and swim the meet without scoring.  It promises to be a great, fun event where all participants can swim more than once.

DUAL MEETS

Dual meets are held on Wednesdays with warm-ups at 3:00pm and a start time of 3:30pm. A dual meet is had with each of the other league members. Swimmers are expected to provide their own ride to and from away meets.

Everyone will swim in each meet, but since we have by far the largest team in the league, it is not always possible for every swimmer to swim more than one event. Swimmers are guaranteed to swim 1 event per swim meet.

On Thursday of each week a new sign-up sheet will be posted for the following week's meet. Swimmers have until Sunday, 5pm to mark YES or NO next to their name. Only swimmers with a YES will be scheduled to swim in the meet.

PARENT VOLUNTEERS

There are several opportunities for parents to help out. In fact, we rely on you to make our summer season a successful one! Please review the opportunities below and consider lending a hand at one or more of the swim meets. The energy is terrific, and it's a great way to spend a summer afternoon.

Timers: For both home and away meets we are required to provide three parents to time swimmers. No experience is necessary, and all timers will get training before the start of each meet to make sure everyone is clear on how to time the lane. Each timer is assigned a lane of the opposing team. For each event, the timer clocks the swimmer in the lane, and records the finishing time on the cards that will be provided along with a stopwatch and clipboard.

Ribbon Writers: The home team needs to provide all ribbon writers. Usually, three volunteers are needed for this job. The scoring for the meet is also tallied at this table. Further instruction on how to score and write ribbons will be given before each meet, and there will always be someone available to answer any questions or concerns.

Bullpen Coordinators: It is characteristic of swim meets to have a lot of children in the same place at the same time as they await their events. We need volunteers to help coordinate the kids in the bullpen and usher them to the starting area for their events.
